Mental Health and Wellbeing

Good mental health "A state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her own community " (World Health Organisation, 2014)

Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It effects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Mental Health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence and through adulthood.

We all have mental health.

At St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we are dedicated to supporting all our children and their families. We are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We all experience life challenges which make us vulnerable and we accept that additional emotional support is therefore required at some time in life.  We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.

At our school we:

  •          help children to understand their emotions and feelings better
  •          help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  •          assist children socially in forming and maintaining healthy relationships
  •          promote self-esteem and  encourage children to be confident
  •          ensure children know that they make a difference and that they are valued
  •          help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks
